"The Annual International forum for Governance and clinical Accreditation commenced in the holy city of Karbala, Iraq, on Wednesday, May 22, 2024. The symposium took place at the Grand Conference Hall of Al-Sibtain University for Medical Sciences under the mentorship of the (Authority of health and medical education directorate/AHMED ) at the Holy Hussein Shrine of Imam Hussein . The forum's theme was ‘Towards Institutional Governance to Enhance Healthcare Service Quality.’ Distinguished decision-makers, experts, consultants, local and international academics, as well as government and private health sector managers and company directors, attended this event.

In his opening address, Dr. Haider Hamza Al-Abadi, the head of the authority, emphasized the importance of governance and accreditation. He stated, ‘International accreditations have become the reference for healthcare institutions in implementing policies and regulations for intended services. Scientific evidence supports the notion that adhering to quality standards improves the service reality for patients, reduces medical errors, and enhances the patient experience during their treatment journey.’

The forum's agenda for the first day included two main topics:

1. Healthcare Institutions’ Accreditation and Its Impact on Improving Healthcare Services Quality: This session featured presentations by Dr. Amani Mustafa, Head of the Central Office for Accreditation and Health Regulation in Egypt, who discussed the effects of healthcare services accreditation on the success of health insurance systems. Dr. Shaimaa El-Minyawi, Advisor for Quality and Accreditation at the Health and Medical Education Authority, spoke about the roadmap for hospitals to implement accreditation and its impact on improving hospital performance and efficiency. Dr. Adel Aliq, a distinguished expert in healthcare management and economics from Lebanon, addressed the roadmap for accrediting healthcare institutions. The first axis concluded with a lecture by Dr. Abdullah Salman, a board-certified specialist in medical services quality, who discussed the advantages and limitations of healthcare accreditation.

2. Modern Management Systems’ Concept and Their Role in Healthcare Institutions’ Governance: In this session, Mr. Haider Maala, Director of (at Takdom Al-Iraq) highlighted about the sustainability and reliability in healthcare insurance systems. Mr. Qaisar Khalid, Executive Director of Information Technology at AHMED, highlighted about the accelerating the digital transformation of the healthcare sector through health insurance implementation. The second axis concluded with a lecture by Mr. Ammar Al-Hasani, Commissioner-General of Al-Jidar Al-Nari Company, on cyber-security and its role in safeguarding healthcare institution and patient data.

Notably, the two dialogue sessions resulted in significant outcomes, which later translated into recommendations for the forum."
